Tax means the money that people should pay for government.

With this money, government pays the cost  needed to run its country.

People pay tax for the food they eat, the clothes they wear, the money they make at work and many other things.

Then government spends money on paying for governmet officers like mail carriers, police officers, soldiers and other expenses.
